Not only will there be art to be found in well-known local hangouts such as Perry’s Joint and Sidewalk Cafe, but personal homes and studio spaces are open to the public on Sunday, June 1st for an even larger, ever-growing Open Studio Days.
Park on Oakland Avenue along a street of California Craftsman homes. Find the one with the colorful “AltaPasadena Studio Tour” sign and mosey around to the back where thingmaker Dave Lovejoy will be exhibiting his “things,” along with sculptor Carl Heinz and David Apodaca, the Succulent Gardener.
Also on the tour will be Patrick Gothard where his paintings—on easels in the garden, hanging along the fence, hanging below the arbor—create an outdoor gallery, though one must venture indoors as well. Take the loop through Patrick and his wife Mary’s home; it’s a fascinating maze and we bet there’ll will something delicious simmering on the stove.
Industrial photographer Fawn Stewart and collage artist Patricia Woodlin will be exhibiting their work at Perry’s Joint and adornment artist Nina Ehlig, watercolorist Karen Bagnard, and soap maker Anne Louise Bannon will be at Lori and Scott Webster’s new Hoopla. Other locations for multiple art and artist viewings will be Sidewalk Cafe, Suite II, and Merge. Other personal studios open to the public include those of Sonali Kolhatkar, Valerie Daval, Lynne McDaniel, Leslie Delamater, Greg Marquez, and Daarina Abdus-Samad.
It’s seven hours to stroll, view, peruse, stop, rest, eat, and enjoy the artists among us. For those drawn to art, this is a wonderful way to experience the environments in which artists create and have an opportunity to meet and chat with the person whose lamp you turn on every night or whose painting you pass in the hallway or whose soap you clean with every day or that thing-a-majig you bought at Lovejoy’s…you still have no idea what it is, but it makes you smile every time you see it.
