Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse

It seems like anyone who’d open a large independent bookstore in this Amazon era would have to be insane, and yet Lenora and Peter Wannier appear to be completely sane – and smart, too. They’ve done everything right in the handsome new store they built from scratch: chosen the titles carefully to reflect the interests of locals, created a peaceful café area, worked with the local school district to stock its curricula titles, started a teen advisory board to choose books that teens actually want to read, established a Saturday-morning children’s storytime, offered meeting space and discounts to book clubs, created an online store, and stocked just enough non-book gifts to round out the mix. Best of all, they’ve just added an Espresso Book Machine, which prints and binds your book right before your eyes; it’s one of the few stores in California to have one.
