Fleur

IMG_0294Fiore Market Café is one of our favorite spots. Located in South Pasadena adjacent to Fremont Theatre, Bill and Ann have put together a warm, inviting spot with the most fresh of everything. Fresh breads for their sandwiches, paninis and baguettes, heirloom tomatoes straight from the Fiore Garden (right next to the patio), daily roasted chicken for the famous roasted chicken sandwich and house roasted beef.

Fiore has grown and only settled in, gotten more homey, and made itself comfortable in the years since Bill and Anne opened in late 2010.

Bill writes on the Fiore blog:

When we opened Fiore Market Cafe 34 loaves on a Saturday was a pretty big deal. The guys would moan about having to make that many loaves. Now 34 loaves is a walk in the park. The only day the guys moan now is Friday afternoon when we start to prepare the dough for Saturday. This Friday we will make 102 loaves. Yikes. Each loaf is made by hand so it takes time, but we have 4 guys making the bread. Last Friday we pumped out the 93 loaves in under an hour. We’ve gotten quick over the last 3 years.

Fiore hasn’t only gotten quick, it’s gotten better over the years. And now there’s more Fiore!

The “more Fiore” is actually Fleur, Bill and Anne’s—well, to be exacting it’s all Anne’s—new store. Toward the end of the Fiore patio, go through the side door into the Fremont Theatre and hook an immediate left. At the end of the hallway is a room with a series of casement windows with a grille pattern, a lime green interior wall that reflects the sunlight, a dark wood floor and simple, industrial-type modern pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. This is Fleur.

Soaps and hand towels, kitchen towels and baskets, olive oils and preserves, cookbooks and gardening books, bags and bottles and jars, frames and vases, a bunch of drying lavender and “honey made from bees,” an old desk and a pie safe. Ann admits she is a collector of things and furniture appears to be one of them. She finds pieces and paints or refurbishes them and now they are on sale. But not for long. We saw a lovely old desk being carried to someone’s car the day after our visit.

Fleur is an inviting, casual store with gifts of smaller sizes perfect for birthdays, hostess and holiday gifts, along with larger pieces of furniture and accessories. The prices look reasonable (quality doesn’t need to mean emptying one’s pocket) and the stock varied. Knowing Ann the bit that we do, we see Fleur as a space in motion—as she finds more pieces of furniture to re-do, repair and share, and with stock evolving and adapting as she hunts and unearths more treasures.

As Fiore is the gem that even more and more people are discovering, so we think Fleur will soon catch the spotlight.
