Flourishing & Skies

Jul 23, 2017

The travels and photography of Karol Franks this spring and summer illustrate our beautiful skies and the burgeoning of color after years of drought.

Addressing a situation always close to Karol’s heart, it’s also been five years and three months that Karol’s daughter Jenna has been looking for a kidney. Jenna is 31 years old and does dialysis on a daily basis, unable to miss even one day.

“She has 100% antibodies, meaning finding a matching donor would be almost impossible. She would match only 3 out of every 10,000 people.”

Whenever Karol has shared her work in Hometown Pasadena’s Photo Op, we’ve included background, links, and updates on Jenna’s search. Today, we’re happy to share the news that via a donor “swap” program a kidney has been found.

A rare site! Thanks to a rainy winter.

Now, these donor/recipient situations can collapse at any time for a wide variety of reasons, but this time the percentage for a “go” appears high. Jenna must have a few more tests, but the donor on the East Coast is waiting to go into surgery and, hopefully, Jenna will receive a new kidney shortly thereafter.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been set up to help with various expenses including co-pays, Jenna’s deductible. Jenna’s post-op anti-rejection drugs are expensive—and she’ll have to take them for the rest of her life. Also, a living donor who’s a part of the swap, which has led to the kidney for Jenna, has incurred many unaffordable out of pocket expenses. He’s receiving some relief from the National Living Donor Assistance Center, but the operative word here is “some.”

It’s a cliche, but true: Every dollar counts. If you could spare a few dollars to help Jenna as she receives and recovers from getting a new kidney, please visit Go Fund Me: A Kidney for Jenna. And, thank you.
