If your little elf is too shy to sit on Santa’s lap, I don’t blame him. Back in my years of believing, I steered clear of any mall outing that might involve that red-velvet belly and husky voice—writing hopeful letters in the comfort of my living room was much more appealing. Whether your child is brave enough to voice his wishes or, like me, prefers to drop in a personal note at a comfortable distance, bring him or her to see St. Nick at One Colorado’s annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday. This will be the official start of the Charles Cherniss Tournament of Toys drive, so along with wish lists, if you bring a new, unwrapped toy, you’ll get a free photo with Santa—or you can wave from a safe distance.
Festivities will include free hot cocoa and cookies and holiday music performed by students from the Los Angeles Music Academy and children’s theatre group Theater 360. In addition his friendly elves, the 2011 Rose Queen, Evanne Friedmann, and her royal court will be helping Santa light the 35-foot tree. While you stuff your Thanksgiving turkey, your little helper can start drafting his wish list.
