Play room, a gym, kitchens, music, and a play yard. Professional Child Development Associates invites families, friends, professionals, and the public at large to its open house on May 24.
PCDA is committed to improving the lives of children and young adults with autism and other developmental challenges. Its programs include music, a creative arts summer camp, speech and language, social skills, feeding services, and a teen club, and a young adults program (18 to 21 years old) working towards greater independence.
The teen club has Teen Buddies, which is a socialization program for teens 13 to 17 years of age. It’s mixed with fun activities that the kids can choose along with service-oriented activities such as planting gardens or trees, visiting the elderly, cleaning up parks, and caring for animals. Socialization can include throwing a party, going out to eat, and having a picnic in the park. Vocational skills are also taught by learning to cook, visiting interactive exhibits and museums, and exploring nature.
PCDA offers as well its “Building Blocks” infant development program, Head Start and preschool support, the Social-Emotional Developmental Intervention Floortime program for 3- to 12-year-olds.
Brothers and sisters, age 5-12, are invited to join Sibling Saturdays for making food, making Play-Doh from scratch, playing tag and pretend, and going on scavenger hunts. It also allows siblings who have brothers and sisters with developmental challenges to meet other siblings who have brothers and sisters with developmental challenges—which we know from experience is a very important matter.
