Labor Day Fun at Descanso Gardens

Aug 30, 2010

Funny, they don't look inbred.

Speaking as a former child, there’s not usually a whole lot for kids to do at botanical gardens: walk around, look at plants, be shooed off the grass. Descanso Gardens, with its regular kid-focused events and that enchanted railroad, does a fine job of not being a bore for young people. This good work continues on Labor Day, with “Boddy’s Big Backyard,” named for Descanso’s original owner and his famous parties, E. Manchester Boddy. There will be a guided walk through the California Natives Garden, which is more accessible (i.e. fewer railings) than it used to be, as well as a reading of Teddy Bears’ Picnic in the Under the Oaks Theater. The big draw, however, has got to be the Mobile Homeboys, who call themselves “an American experiment in melodic inbreeding.” Enjoy a little barbecue from Patina catering during their two-hour afternoon set. Full schedule of events here.
