Chirp Kids

10369593_457597967718134_8240885954273098016_nHas it been years since you’ve been able to sit and have a lovely latte without having to keep your third eye on the look-out for a roaming toddler or two?

Jennifer Gunn and Carole Fleischman are two moms who thought so, to the point that they have opened Chirp Kids Karaoke Cafe on Colorado Boulevard just west of Sierra Madre Boulevard.

With a cafe on one side and a kids’ fun space on the other, Chirp is trying to have it all, for parent and child alike. The children’s side is bright, with orange walls, an orange stage, brightly-colored chairs, and paper parasols in bright colors hanging from the ceiling. Before kids, from age 1-13, take to the stage, they are welcome to don a costume; a dress-up corner offers hats, wigs, glasses, shoes, and boas.

The “this is for you, parent” cafe is more subdued with softly-colored walls sparingly decorated with lovely, but calmly-colored paintings (in frames and not). But the bright orange separating wall also has cut-outs with a bar-like table and high chairs for the parents who want to peek over into the kids’ space and watch. Parents who are looking for some “me” time may take advantage of the magazine collection (when’s the last time you went cover to cover?), the free WiFi, and, of course, the beverages and pastries.

A parent’s quiet place

If you have one of your own who’s a mad fan of the movie Frozen, maybe she (or he) would like to grab a mic and, as it’s baking to 90 degrees outside, sing a refrain or two of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”. Yes? Then Frozen Friday is 3-5 p.m. Open mic days and playtime vary, as do sing-a-longs and talent shows. Check the website or call for this week’s options.

August 25th-30th: Open mic on Wednesday and Friday, 2-5 p.m. (the business recording says) and on Tuesday and Thursday, it’s Chirp teaming up with Little Junebugs for crafting, and karaoke (naturally).

We were a bit confused because the information above doesn’t agree with what’s listed on the Chirp website’s “event” page, which states that the place is “closed Tuesday through Thursday of this week for private parties,” but their Facebook page matches the phone info, so we’d suggest sticking to the phone and FB. Or, email

Little one having a birthday? Private parties are also a big part of the Chirp’s business…
