Never Enough California Natives

Our garden gal Sandy Gillis is here to share two essential fall outings for San Gabriel Valley gardeners:

The San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the California Native Plant Society is holding its annual plant sale, “Under the Oaks 2009: Native Plants for Foothill Gardens,” at Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena on Saturday. The canopy of oaks in rustic Eaton Canyon provides a serene venue for getting to know a bit more about California natives from knowledgeable CNPS volunteers. This year more thn 1,000 plants in more than 80 varieties are offered, all well suited for gardens in the L.A. Basin, including perennials that attract birds and butterflies. The plants are reasonably priced (psst! CNPS members receive discounts), and volunteers will help you load your car. Cash or personal checks only; no credit cards. For further information about California flora or to see a plant list, visit cnps-sgm.org.

A week after you’ve made your plant selections, come back to Eaton Canyon for a gardening workshop led by California Native Plant Society chapter heads Gabi and Clifford McLean. This is a hands-on demonstration for learning how to properly plant and care for your new pals. Yes, native plants actually do take a year of watering to become established, and you’ll learn other such practical tips to insure the health of your investments. The workshop is free, and tools will be provided, but you need to bring work gloves and wear appropriate shoes and comfortable clothing. And think about a hat, a little sunscreen, a bottle of water, a well-balanced lunch beforehand, perhaps a yoga class earlier that morning or at the very least, some stretching. Not required. I’m just saying, is all. For more details about this and other calendar events visit cnps-sgm.org.
