Camellia & Tea Festival

Feb 23, 2015

Feb-Camellia-Fest-MZEnjoying the blooming of tens of thousands camellias every year at Descanso Gardens is thanks to a man who was born in a log cabin in Washington state, was gassed during World War I in the Argonne, and spent time working as a “door-to-door flatiron salesman, ditch digger, janitor and miner.” This man? Elias Manchester Boddy.

Besides publishing the Los Angeles Illustrated Daily News, he had interests in politics, ranching, horticulture and the science of plants, and in 1936, Boddy purchased a 150-acre parcel of land in La Cañada. He named his estate as Rancho de Descanso or “Ranch of Restfulness (or Repose).”

According to LaCanadaOnline, Boddy planted 100,000 camellias underneath the property’s old oak trees, but over the years horticulturists learned that these shade-loving flowers need more water than oak trees can tolerate, so consequently, their numbers have been largely reduced. Yet, 46 species and 654 varieties of camellias still beautify the Gardens today. And now they’re blooming, just in time for the annual camellia festival, which includes two days of walks, talks, activities, crafts, dance, and tea tastings.
