48th Annual Holiday Look In Tour

Nov 29, 2015

Jacob Maarse

Get swept up by the season by touring a handful of different homes decorated especially for the holiday season. Get inspired, borrow ideas for your own home at the 48th Annual Holiday Look In tour.

Once again, four local floral designers will illustrate their style and creativity by decorating a home for the holidays: Drew Domenghini of Patterson’s Topiaries, Pots & Teas, Arcadia’s Margit Holakoui, Ixora Floral Studio, and Jacob Maarse that has participated in the tour since its inception in 1968.

Look In is a self-guided tour and this year attendees are invited to a holiday boutique.

No. 1: Lyddon Home with Drew Domenghini of Patterson’s Topiaries, Pots & Teas

He’s mostly known as the architect of the famous Wrigley Mansion, but G. Lawrence Stimson’s Lyddon House (pictured below) will be on stage during Look In. It was built in 1912 and described as a “lovely Americana home that embodies and personifies Pasadena and Southern California architecture.” The house includes historical pieces and “a treasured collection of American artists.” The backyard garden features a 100-year-old wisteria tree “sweeping gently over the pavilion adjacent to the pool.”

No. 2: Hanson & Judice Home with contemporary decorations by Jacob Maarse

The Hanson & Judice house is a 1927 French Norman revival manor located at the south end of the Arroyo Seco was built by Lt. Colonel Lansing Beach and his wife, Katherine, who met in Europe during World War I and wanted a home that would remind them of where they met. They hired Witmer and Watson; “the front garden was designed to create a transition from the wilds of the arroyo to the formality of the French Normandy-style house in the parterre style.”

No. 3: Asjes Home with Yuletide creations by Ixora Floral Studio

In a neighborhood near Caltech sits a 1926 English Revival home designed by George B. Brigham. The owners resided in Europe for many years and the pieces they acquired during that time now decorate the rooms of this “charming, lovely” home.

No. 4: Ermshar & Monahan Home with seasonal decor by Margit Holakoui

Another home in a neighborhood near Caltech is this Spanish Colonial Revival designed by Marston, Van Pelt, and Maybury and built in 1912. The house is filled with artwork that’s been collected over the years and handed down through the generations. A fountain and loggia has been recently added in the back garden and “specially imported” bamboo creates a wall around the pool area, while “on an opposite wall is an amusing two dimensional apple  tree sculpture.”

The Holiday Look In tour is a creation of the Women’s Committee of the Pasadena Symphony and proceeds benefit the Symphony-POPS concert series, as well as the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra, Pasadena Young Musicians Orchestra, and the Pasadena All-City Orchestra. Youngsters are offered “robust” training and music appreciation and aptitude.

Over the last 45 years since being founded in 1957, the Women’s Committee has donated $3 million, including $100,000 from its 2014 Holiday Look In tour.
