Growing Up on Millionaire’s Row: An Immersive Fenyes Mansion Tour

Jul 30, 2017

Imagine the experience of a child in the year 1910 on Pasadena’s famed “Millionaire’s Row.”

“Growing Up on Millionaire’s Row” interactive tours of historic Fenyes Mansion at Pasadena Museum of History invite young visitors to step back in time and discover how different it would have been had they lived a century or more ago. These tours are recommended for ages 6-12 and an accompanying adult. They will be offered this summer on Wednesday, August 16 and Saturday, August 19, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

Youngsters will meet the family that lived in the elegant 1906 Beaux Arts-style mansion and explore their lifestyle—dress, technology, manners, and play. Tour highlights include hearing music played on a Victor Victrola, viewing 3-D images through a stereoscope, and learning about candlestick telephones and ice boxes. The young time-travelers will also view the charming three-story dollhouse, discover the mysteries of a hair receiver, and make the acquaintance of Dom Pedro de Jura Juba! Tour participants can also dress up in replica period clothing and try their skills at vintage games such as marbles, tops, pick up-sticks and ball & cup.

Lemonade and cookies will be served at the tour’s end. In addition, each child will take home a copy of the book, The Way Pasadena Was by Kathleen Thorne-Thompson, photographs and stories about the way Pasadena was one hundred years ago. Copies of the book are also on sale in the Museum Store for $12.95.

Growing up on Millionaire’s Row draws from PMH’s award-winning Junior Docents and My Masterpieces programs—which provide local history and cultural experiences to hundreds of public and private school students annually—to offer the same opportunities to individual visitors. The tours are supported in part with funds received from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Foundation.
