A Taste of Art

May 30, 2010

Melon Wine, by Ron Chesley, is among the works on sale at A Taste of Art.

Gale Kohl, owner of the eponymous Gale’s Restaurant on Fair Oaks, and her friends have put together a quietly remarkable fundraising night, A Taste of Art, for the past  few years. The warm and bustling restaurant is transformed overnight into an art gallery, with dozens of works for sale at eminently reasonable prices. The parking lot is tented to hold tables and chairs; liquor flows, music plays, and the Italian-Mediterranean finger food keeps coming. Guests schmooze, snatch up paintings, photographs, sculpture and other goodies, and have a fun, raucous, memorable Monday night — and it’s all in aid of a charity.

The “committee” — really, friends who have gathered around a table of good food and wine for years — selects a local organization to receive the dough every year. This hands-on group of a half-dozen buddies gathers the artwork (Gale is an avid collector and is on the board of the Armory; her friends are connected all over, including at Disney), create the invitation and publicity, and get food, decor and fine wines donated. It’s a tribute to the power of an idea and an impulse — to help the greater Pasadena community.

This year proceeds will go to the Wellness Center – Foothills, which provides free support services to cancer patients, their caregivers and their families. Tickets are tiered, with early birds getting a special reception and first dibs on the art — but paying the most for the privilege.

Gardens of the Alhambra, by Joe Rohde, is also among the works for sale.
