Trade in your old, polluting, gas-guzzling lawn mower for a high-performance, environmentally friendly cordless electric model at the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Lawn Mower Exchange Program.

You have to register, but in doing so you can get up to 75% in savings on such brand name lawn mowers as Black & Decker and Greenstation.

It’s first come, first served, so get on it by pre-registering at aqmd.gov and clicking on the Lawn Mower Exchange banner right in the middle of the page or calling 888.425.6247.

And since the majority of us—home owners—no longer mow our own lawns, how about helping out the workers and striving small business owners who trim, cut, prune, plant, and mow our gardens and lawns by organizing a mower exchange for them? Couldn’t their equipment use an upgrade?

Black & Decker: look how it folds up!

They say the process is easy and convenient, a mere 10-15 minutes, and supposedly you don’t even have to get out of your car.

Upon arrival, workers will remove the old gas mower from the vehicle and drain it of hazardous fluids prior to its destruction at a metal recycling facility. After payment is made, attendants will place the new, boxed mower in the customer’s vehicle.

You have to be 18 years old, so all those high school kids who mow lawns for extra money (do kids even do that anymore?) may have to ask a parent to conduct this exchange. Old mowers must be in working order (which seems strange if they are just going to be destroyed). And, only one mower exchange per household.

Here are your choices:
Black & Decker, 18″ 36 volt, normally $379, now $100
Black & Decker, 19″ 36 volt, normally $429, now $180
Black & Decker, 19″ 36 volt self propelled, normally $479, now $250
Greenstation, 20″ 24 volt, normally $430, now $150
Greenstation, 20″ 24 volt self propelled, normally $470, now $220

Mower Exchange Locations:
Saturday, May 25th, 8 a.m.-noon in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl
Saturday, June 8th, 8 a.m.-noon in Riverside
Saturday, July 13th, 8 a.m.-noon in Anaheim

When the program ends this summer, SCAQMD will have scrapped more than 50,000 highly polluting gasoline mowers, removing almost 160 tons of smog-forming pollutants in the Southland’s air.

Now that is a Good Deed.
