Hillsides Uncorked: From Elton John to Jacob Maarse

Feb 16, 2015

Jacob_MaarseGuests are being told to prepare for their palate “to be ignited with Global market dining.” We assume that means dishes representing the unique and intense flavors from around the world. As the eats are to be paired with “bold” red and white wines, as well as specialty cocktails, it’s a rather tempting promotional tease.

As the evening is to benefit Hillsides, the local nonprofit that was founded more than one hundred years ago and takes, “a child’s traumatic upbringing or a family’s challenging situation and turn it into an opportunity to restore hope,” the temptation to participate is even stronger.

We’re talking about Hillsides’ annual gala: Hillsides Uncorked!

Collaborations have begun between the Simons’, owners of Bistro 45 and A/K/A Bistro, and the Langham Huntington Pasadena Executive Chef Denis Depoitre. They are working to create a menu of “fresh and sustainable organic meats, produce and seafood” and “dishes will be prepared in such a way that protect the environment and keep the planet healthy for current and future generations.” (Slight aside: Looking for an image of Depoitre, we were intrigued to learn that not only is he a master chef, but he is also an accomplished harmonica player and a member of the Dennis Herrera Blues Band.)

Upon arrival, guests will be offered “a uniquely crafted cocktail,” the hors d’oeuvres will be “inspired” by the Langham’s The Royce restaurant, the wines shall arrive from Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez and Santa Rita Hills wineries, and there will be two “interactive” dessert stations. (Is that a highfalutin way of saying that attendees may request, “More 70% dark chocolate on my bark or one more dollop of guava cream for my gateau?”)

Fritz Coleman of NBC4 Weather will emcee the live auction and live music will be luring those so inclined to the dance floor.

Auction items include:

  • A stay in a Deer Valley Resort mansion situated minutes from the ski slope and able to accommodate up to 18 guests
  • An oval tanzanite pendant set in white gold with diamonds and a pink sapphire created by Barbara Poer Designs
  • A cocktail party for 20 in the rose garden at the Jacob Maarse estate
  • A week stay in a penthouse condo in New York City
  • A signed guitar from Nancy Wilson of the rock band Heart
  • Admission for 2 to the Elton John “The Million Dollar Piano” show in Las Vegas with dinner for two.

Has this wet your appetite in more ways than one?
