Fill a Backpack for Fall

Jul 8, 2010

September, we hope, is a long way off, but you can be a sponsor or volunteer now for this summer’s work on Foothill Family Service‘s Back-to-School Backpack program. Last year, on the first day of school, more than 1,600 elementary, middle and high school students who wouldn’t have school supplies otherwise were able to tote backpacks filled with classroom and homework tools thanks to this ten-year-old program.

Foothill Family Service is a nonprofit organization that provides outpatient mental health and social services to thousands of children, teens and families through family centers, 84 schools and 42 preschools throughout San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, Burbank and Glendale. Young clients receive treatment and services through such program as school-based counseling and mental health programs, the group’s child abuse prevention and treatment program, and its domestic violence prevention and treatment program.

Because their families were experiencing financial hardship, these students need the material support, but having a cache of your very own school supplies offers an emotional boost, too. It’s great to be starting the school year as other students do, with a fresh backpack, pencils, paper, erasers, markers, folders and the like.

Foothill Family Service, founded in 1926, works throughout the summer on the backpack program and is looking for help to provide even more backpacks this year, anticipating greater need because of the continuing poor economy.
