Love Constitute (serves 2)

1/3 cup Infatuation
5-6 chunks of Total Joy
Equal pinch of Want & Need
6 heaping tablespoons of Unrealistic Expectations

Layers of Denial
Sprinkling of Fairy Dust (optional)

Add each ingredient sequentially. Mix thoroughly. Cover and let rise in a heated environment. Punch down and knead repeatedly. Roll out and twist into shape. Bake interminably.

Love Constitute was a recipe that came to me one night as my brain released the day’s duties and responsibilities—the work as a mom, as a photographer, as a failing businesswoman, as a flailing divorced mom, as a woman observing curiously, squinting at the obscure path ahead, her legs feeling weighted, bare feet shuffling through clinging dust…

Love Constitute was imagined in regard to my novel Amy’s Own but never made it into print because I finally saw it for what it was—my own experience with the great love of my life, a love that did not survive in traditional terms, but remains as it remains, between the two of us, neither here nor there, but precious as our own.
