A Zhena concert is a complete village experience…

Zhena means “woman” or “wife” in Slavic languages and these women of Zhena, based out of San Pedro, have dedicated themselves to preserving and presenting the folk songs of Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

Story-like narratives and colorful authentic costumes are part of the experience, along with “the intricate rhythms, enchanting harmonies, and primal themes.”

On April 9th, Pasadena Presbyterian Church’s Ministry of Music continues their free Music at Noon concerts with Zhena Folk Chorus.

The close harmonies of the voices reflect the traditions and talents of groups of women who spend their lives together singing for recreation. The ganga style, for instance, involves complex dissonance, while the other songs were richly melodic. (John Farrell, Long Beach Press-Telegram)

  1. You have to hear this group if you can. They are amazing, and I don’t think we have anything else like them in the Southland.
