It’s a simple inevitability in this day and age: everything that can be turned into a musical, eventually, will. Exhibit A: Spider-Man. Exhibit B: The Book of Mormon. Exhibit C: Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, or Twist, which starts preview showings at the Pasadena Playhouse tomorrow. It moves the Dickens story to New Orleans in 1928, with a contemporary score and other American trappings. And it has some heavy hitters under the hood: book by Tony-nominee William F. Brown, music and lyrics by Grammy-winner Tena Clark, music by Gary Prim, direction and choreography by Golden-Globe-and-Emmy-winner Debbie Allen, and a starring role (Della) for American Idol finalist Tamyra Gray. Rumour has it this one is quite good.
