The PhD Movie, at Caltech

Sep 18, 2011

Academia: a rarefied and often ridiculous realm. Among the many chroniclers of the foibles of the ivory tower is Dr. Jorge Cham, who has been writing his comic, Piled Higher and Deeper, since he was a Robotics PhD candidate at Stanford way back in 1997. The PhD Movie is based on Dr. Cham’s comic strip, and was produced entirely by Caltech grad students. It offers a “humorous and poignant look” at four grad students hunting down their PhDs. It’s supposed to be pretty good—no mean feat for a movie directed by an aeronautics student and produced by a planetary scientist. There are two free screenings this Thursday, one at 8 and one at 10. Theoretically, you have to know a Caltecher to get into the 8 p.m. show, while the general public will be allowed in to the 10 p.m. screening. We bet, though, that if you make big puppy dog eyes, you can get into the earlier show.
