Many moons ago, I met with a professor of mine to discuss doing some research for her book. We started talking about the then-head of our program, whom I didn’t know much about. “He’s big in Japan,” she said. Like the Tom Waits song? “Yeah, like the Tom Waits song.” Many moons later, Sam Lipsyte is big in America, too. He won a Guggenheim, for example. He’s nothing like, then, the cynical, self-loathing, meta-aware loser at the center of his recently released third novel, The Ask. Or maybe he is? I don’t really know—I kept having to drop his class (scheduling conflicts). I hear he’s a swell guy though. He’s obviously a brilliant writer. So come on out to Vroman’s this Wednesday, where he’ll be discussing and signing his latest. I’ll see you there.
