In a strange bit of scheduling, the second night of the Caltech Dance Show has been programmed opposite the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, a professional troupe blending classical Indian Odissi dancing with some modern practices and ideas. Nothing against Caltech’s homegrown dancers, but one wonders how they stack up against this. In addition to being an ensemble, Nrityagram is a village, not far from Bangalore, that’s given over entirely to dance. The ensemble is one of the foremost troupes in India, and commonly commission new work from Indian classical composers. In other words, they really know how to shake those moneymakers.
