Those devoted nature enthusiasts at the Pasadena Audubon Society have a treat planned for their next general meeting: a visit from Dr. John Fitzpatrick, the director of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology. Dr. Fitzpatrick’s illustrated lecture will examine the vital role birds play in the conservation of biological diversity, and in international diplomacy. Canaries in coal mines are just the beginning: Birds are extremely sensitive indicators of environmental health and ecological change, and they rapidly self-correct when out of sync with their environments. Can humans do the same? Dr. Fitzpatrick thinks so — if we let the “Lord God Bird” show us how.
