Well, “Accentuated Forms” is the actual name of the Norton Simon’s ongoing discussion series focused on “representations of the female form” from East to West and then to now, but this week’s session is perhaps more aptly described by the title of this post. The topic of conversation, guided by a museum and limited to twenty interlocutors (reserve your space at the information desk!), is “the exaggerated proportions of Indian and Southeast Asian celestial female statuary as representations of fertility, abundance and spiritual union.” Indeed. Seriously though, the Norton Simon has an excellent collection of South and Southeast Asian sculpture, and nothing says Mothers Day like talking about naked statues with your materfamilias.
