Going Out with a POPS

Sep 20, 2010

These are not the droids you're looking for.

This Saturday is both the last Pasadena POPS show of the summer season, and the last ever conducted by Rachael Worby. Her exit music will consist of movie tunes from The Way We Were, Funny Girl, The Little Mermaid (sung by the voice of Ariel herself, Jodi Benson), The Wizard of Oz, and, of course, a Star Wars tribute. In addition to Benson, the orchestra will be joined by globetrotting saxophonist Doug Masek and—seriously—a bunch of people dressed up as Stormtroopers (the Imperial kind, not the Sturmabteilung). The 501st Legion, as they are known, is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting interest in Star Wars through, among other things, the building and wearing of high quality costumes. They do Bar Mitzvahs too. The Galactic Empire just isn’t what it used to be.
