This Saturday, La Canada’s premier indie bookstore and coffeehouse reopens after four months of reconstruction. (It was all but destroyed when an out-of-control truck slammed into it on April 1.) Owners Lenore and Peter Wannier stayed in business during the restoration in a trailer in the back parking lot, but it certainly wasn’t the same. Now they’re back, and to celebrate they’re throwing an all-day party on August 1.
First up is free drip coffee and juice for those who are in the store at 10 a.m. (to accompany your coffee, we suggest one of Euro Pane’s bread puddings from the pastry case). At 11 a.m., La Canada firefighters will join kids for storytime (if there’s no fire), and after the story, kids will be treated to face painting and raffle prizes. In the evening, from 7:30 to 9, there’ll be raffle prizes and music from Steven Winnaman and friends.
While you’re there, make sure to hunt for the books with red dots on the spine. These were slightly bruised in the accident and are on sale for 50% off, and there are some great finds…. we’ve got our eye on Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, a fabulous $35 cookbook that’s half off because it lost its dust jacket — which would just get torn in the kitchen anyway.
