It is becoming increasingly hard to pun on A Noise Within, Southern California’s only classical theater repertory company. Their latest production is Great Expectations, which, yes, is Dickens, but has a powerful new stage adaptation by Neil Bartlett. There’s original music by Doug Newell—does that mean it’s a musical? Unclear. The original Dickens novel is a pretty good read, though the 1998 Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow film version is less than amazing. We trust ANW, though.
This is the third play in ANW’s 19th and final season in Glendale. As theater fans and regular readers no doubt already know, they are moving to East Pasadena, assuming they’ve raised that last $3,000,000. Great Expectations opened on Halloween Eve, and will run until Friday, December 19th.
