Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.
California Bookstore Day is a statewide party on May 3, 2014 as big and varied as the state itself. It’s more than 90 stores in more than 80 zip codes putting their bells on and throwing out the welcome mat. Think Record Store Day, but for book nerds. (Italized text courtesy of CABookstoreDay)
Our local independent bookstore, Vroman’s, is taking this celebration to the max with an all-supplies-provided bookmaking workshop for kids, a literary costume contest, ImproTheatre presenting a special performance of L.A. Noir UnScripted (inspired by authors Raymond Chandler and James M. McCain), and Pasadena’s Prospect Park Books owners and authors playing literary trivia. PPB partners Colleen Dunn Bates and Patty O’Sullivan will join authors Lian Dolan, Judy Rothman, and Jennie Cook running rounds of trivia. Teams may register and come test their literary knowledge—great prizes are pledged! (Sign up online or call 626.449.5320.)
Extra Soul Jazz will perform throughout the day, kids may create collaborative stories with a giant Mad Libs, and play the odds at Vroman’s spinning prize wheel (more prizes!)
