BLUE Milagro & Día de Los Muertos

Oct 22, 2014

BLUE.MILAGRO.2014.INVITATIONHave you ever built an altar, an ofrenda? See no less than 9 community altars being built by members of BLUE Milagro in the courtyard of the Pasadena Playhouse on October 24th, from 3 p.m. until completion.

What began 20 years ago as a Día de Los Muertos solo exhibition by local artist Vibiana Aparicio-Chamberlin has grown, morphed, and blossomed into an event that now spans several blocks, receives thousands of visitors, and yet still retains an aura of family and friends—children, parents, artists—gathering to celebrate loved ones, culture, and art.

B.L.U.E. stands for Beyond Limitations. Urban Education. and also means to be somewhat melancholy—let’s not forget that this event celebrates those who are no longer with us. Milagro means miracle. It is also a small metal amulet that represents the miracle one is wishing for. (BLUE Milagro)

The evening event in the courtyard includes live music thanks to the Grammy Award-winning band Quetzal and the Leslie and Mark Duo, and a performance by Bob Baker Marionettes. Craft-making for kids will be organized by Little Junebugs, and tacos and beverages will be for sale courtesy of El Portal and Red White + Bluezz.

The courtyard will be decorated with giant calaca skeleton puppets and also with decorative plates and kites created by students in the Pasadena Unified School DistrictPasadena City College students will have their original silkscreens on exhibit and for sale, and Vibiana and her daughter-in-law, Karen Walker Chamberlin, created original designs that have been silkscreened onto t-shirts, which are also available for purchase.

The event’s annual art exhibition may be viewed just down the street from the Playhouse on the second floor of Zona Rosa Caffe.

Cathy Ashworth is the current featured DOD Blue Milagro Artist. Her beautiful painting is featured in this year’s 20th Celebration Poster (image, top right). Cathy is from Pasadena and is an active volunteer for Blue Milagro. She is an established painter and mixed media artist exhibiting in many Southern California galleries. The exhibition at Zona Rosa is on view till November 30th.

El Día de Los Muertos is produced with much love by artist volunteers. It is a Milagro of love and support from the artists and the community of families of Pasadena. (BLUE Milagro)

The altars will be on view from Friday 3 p.m. through Sunday, October 26th.

  1. Thank you, Kat. Muchisimas gracias. Families and friends throughout the San Gabriel Valley saw this article and came to our Blue Milagro 20th Dia De Los Muertos event on Oct. 24 to have fun and to see our nine altars throughout the weekend. Karen Walker Chamberlin Director and creative designer led numerous volunteer parents, PCC students and artists to build an authentic Oaxacan Dia De Los Muertos site.
We still have our fabulous Dia De Los Muertos art exhibition of hundreds of youth wall altars and commemorative paintings by children and adult professional artists. Thank you for giving us a shout out.
We invite everyone to come and visit our art show and altar dedicated to our beloved pets at the Zona Rosa til the end of November. Zona Rosa is at 15 S. El Molino Ave, Pasadena 91101
