The smell of wood after a fresh saw, the feel of a file in our hand, fingers running along the grain—we love working with wood. Don’t get the wrong idea, we’re no woodworker. Our claim to fame (because a friend loves it and wants to make one too) is our office desk, made because we couldn’t find one deep enough. What we made was a behemoth created with 4×4 legs, which we learned subsequently was a bit of overkill.
Side Street Projects offers to teach the basics of woodworking over four Saturdays beginning April 8.
Students will learn cutting with a saw and miter box, shaping wood with files, rasps, and surforms, and assembling projects with nails, screws, and glue. Projects are the students’ choice, though Side Street suggests hand held objects, toys, or models. (That’s probably where we should’ve started.)
Dates: April 8, 15, 22, 29.
