It’s intriguing what can come out of being principal for a day. The story goes something like this:

Once upon a time—or 3 years ago, to be more accurate—former Executive Director of the Pasadena Playhouse Stephen Eich was the “Principal for a Day” at Blair High School. During the course of his tenure—or 8-hour shift—he became so enamored of Benita Scheckel’s choir class that he declared he was at her service—offering the venue of the Playhouse to stage Blair’s musical review known as Ovations.

At some point during this providential relationship, Scheckel revealed that she had written an original musical called “Bend in the Road” based on the Ann of Green Gables series (music by Michael Upward). Eich read the piece, once again became enamored, and offered Scheckel a deal. If she could come up with the funds to produce the musical, the Playhouse would support the project. Through a Kickstarter campaign, this was duly accomplished, and opening night was this past Saturday, the 22nd.

Four Pasadena Unified School District students are cast in the musical, “acting right alongside professional equity actors” and Scheckel’s stage manager is a Blair alum. One hundred eighty tickets were put aside for all the middle schools (Eliot, Wilson, Marshall, and McKinley) with PEF providing the buses and transportation. The show runs through October 7th, though if these all get sold out, the Playhouse will add an additional weekend.

So, come see “Bend in the Road” and celebrate local schools, creative teachers, the Principal for a Day Program, the Pasadena Playhouse,…and serendipity.

    It’s EICH, not EICHS.

  2. Kat Ward says:

Thank you, Ken, for pointing out the misspelling of Stephen Eich’s name. The corrections have been made.
