Hometown Pasadena: The San Gabriel Valley Book (Prospect Park Books, 2010) says that South Pasadena’s Firefly Bistro is “bright by day and romantic by night” and that they “turn out an always-interesting and usually wonderful menu with multiethnic offerings” and that “the lunchtime salads are excellent, the desserts comforting, and the wine list creative and affordable.”
Firefly’s “Wine & Song” series happens Wednesday nights, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and is said to be “a midweek soul-southing spirit-lifting hootenanny” and is hosted by Brad Colerick. Wednesdays now include “fancy tacos” or try their shrimp and grits, braised pork shank with sweet potato-ancho puree, Swedish meatballs, or lamb barley soup. The pecan coated catfish seems to always get rave reviews.
The series features two accomplished songwriters each week. Plus great artists who just show up and play. We cook up a crazy menu of snacks, finger foods, tapas, and, of course, our regular menu is available. (EatAtFirefly.com)
Thursday nights, 6 to 9 p.m., are reserved for “Burgers, Beers, & Blues!” Big B Brenner strums his guitar and plays some folk blues while you can test out Chef Paul’s weekly signature hamburger (including a veggie burger). Firefly stocks “ice-cold regional micro brews…at old time prices.”
The bar is beer and wine only, but they make “wonderful cocktails with Soju (a Korean distilled rice vodka)!”
In regard to their dress code, they simply say, “we do require that you be dressed at all times.”
