It’s summer and it’s time, even more than usual, for enjoying the great outdoors. Not as in hiking the Sam Merrill Trail or Sunset Cliffs, but the great outdoors of the town of Pasadena. Magnolia House on South Lake has opened a sidewalk patio just in time for summer and lingering brunches—which, of course, could occur (if necessary) after a Sunday morning hike.
New food items, new summer cocktails, and extended brunch hours are on the menu for those who like to imbibe and linger. Thankfully, traditional bloody marys and mimosas are still a tradition, listed along with Magnolia’s “Almost Arnold Palmer” with honey ginger lemonade, vodka, and lapsang soughing-infused scotch. “From Panama, with Chocolate” has SelvaRey cacao rum, Amaro Meletti (which is flavored with anise and saffron), concrete espresso (concrete?), cinnamon, mint, coffee, and cream.
But summer calls for new cocktails and here are the seasonal creations by Beverage Director Brian Klemm, include:
—Summer in Lima: Pisco Portón la Caravedo Peruvian brandy, lemon balsamic bianco, ginger, Thai basil, and coconut.
—Smoke.Oil.Salt (photo, top right): SelvaRey rum, lemon, thyme, olive oil, chickpea and smoked sea salt.
—Mestizo: El Silencio Mezcal, Shui Jin Fang Wallaby, peppermint Amaro, Cappelletti aperitif, and Amaro candy.
Menu items include eggs, bacon, and sausage basics; huevos rancheros, eggs benedict, as well as Korean fried chicken, a pastrami breakfast sandwich with house-cured pork belly, and shrimp ‘n grits. Home fries come standard or with garlic, tarragon, and dill.
On Saturdays and Sundays, Magnolia offers brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. An added note on its website: “Please note the kitchen closes between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., but our bar remains open.” Important to know!
The location of Magnolia House is truly historic, a California Craftsman that’s been a family home and a Prohibition liquor store.
