Among Pasadena’s many hidden jewels, you’ll surely want to check out (excuse the pun) Espress Yourself, the coffeehouse on the sun-splashed patio of the Pasadena Public Library, where library patrons, police, and legal eagles from the courthouse next door stop by for a most pleasant repast.
Distinguishing itself from your run-of-the-mill coffee shop in several ways, Espress Yourself offers Pasadena’s crème de la crème: Jones Coffee Roasters coffees; exquisite baked goods from Euro Pane; cookies from Atladena’s Pattycake; loose-leaf, properly steeped tea; and well-balanced espresso drinks (often topped with real, homemade whipped cream). But the secret ingredient that makes Espress Yourself such a special place is the proprietor, Richard “The Silver Fox” Hawthorne.
Richard’s effusive good company makes the library patio a coffeehouse version of Cheers. The kind of place where you—and your drink preferences—are remembered.
