Five comp events for the month of October! Below are some freebies this week:

Master the art of story writing at the Edendale Library

Learn the world of plot structure at the Build-a-Story workshop. Authors B.A. Williamson (The Marvelous Adventures of Gwendolyn Gray) and Constantine Singer (Strange Days) will lead the class at the Edendale Library on Monday, October 15 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Go here for details

Tell your jokes at Bookshow

The monthly comedy open mic is back at the Bookshow in Highland Park. Come Tuesday, October 16 to show off your humor (sign up is at 7 p.m.) or support the brave ones conquering the stage. The event – hosted by Sumukh Torgalkar – begins at 7:30 p.m. Go here for details

Tashi Wada’s Record Release Show in Frogtown

Don ‘t miss Tashi Wada Group’s (featuring Julia Holter and Corey Fogel) record release show for their new album “Nue” with special guests DJ Pete Swanson and Dj Carlos Niño at Zebulon on Wednesday, October 17th.

Reach those fitness goals with Zumba!

Get your Zumba on at the East Los Angeles Library. This exercise fitness program incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, merengue and mambo styles of dance. This class – for ages for 14 and up – is suitable for all shapes and fitness levels. It’s recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Don’t forget bring a towel and water bottle! Class is from 6 – 7 p.m. Thursday, October 18. Go here for details

Songwriter show at Stories Books & Café

Stories Books & Café presents in Echo Park “Songwriters in the Round,” featuring four songwriters (Sie Sie Benhoff, Dylan Rodrigue, Kat Myers and RJ Bloke) on stage at the same time, exchanging tunes and tall tales. Show starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19. All ages welcomed! Go here for details
