Chevy Tahoe sits on sidewalk after crash/C.J. Salgado

Two pedestrians were injured late this afternoon at a busy East Los Angeles intersection after an SUV jumped the curb and skidded down a sidewalk, pinning one of the victims and destroying a bus shelter.

Sheriff deputies closed off the intersection of Whittier and Atlantic boulevards following the crash that took place at about 5:30 p.m., according to Eastsider contributor C.J. Salgado, who was cut by flying glass as he pulled into a shopping center during the incident. “It was like as if an explosion had gone off with glass and debris everywhere around the points of impact,” said Salgado.

Salgado said he was entering the shopping center when a white Chevy Yukon suddenly jumped the curb on the northeast corner of the intersection and hit two pedestrians: a young women who was walking with her boyfriend and an older man. Said Salgado:

The impact was so violent that the vehicle pushed both of them into the nearby bus stop structure, completely destroying it. Both victims were alive after the impact but sustained severe injuries from their apparent condition after impact. The male victim was pinned between the vehicle, and the bus stop structure turned into twisted metal. Firefighters had to use special tools to cut him free. Most disturbingly, the driver of the vehicle took off after the accident.

Salgado said that “it was a miracle that there were not more victims as the intersection is always busy during rush hour.”
