EAST LOS ANGELES — Cruising Whittier Boulevard, once a time honored ritual, had faded away in recent years. But apparently there’s been a cruising comeback, with events drawing 2,000 classic as well as rather ordinary cars to jam the boulevard. Now, L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis wants to renew efforts to clamp down on the cruising events in response to citizen complaints.

Solis said in a statement that residents have complained about traffic congestion and safety concerns. They have observed violations of the vehicle code ranging from driving under the influence to parking in handicapped parking spaces, and blocking business driveways.

“Recently, my district has experienced an increase in cruising events despite a County ordinance adopted in 1997 that prohibits these events,” said Solis, who represents East L.A. “Seniors cannot get around or cross the street, residents cannot go to the gas station without encountering thousands of cars, and local stores and pharmacies are shut down.”

Today, the board of supervisors adopted a measure to look into how to enforceunpermitted cruising events. The County Counsel, the Department of Public Works, the Sheriff’s Department, and California Highway Patrol were asked to report back in two weeks on plan to address these events, including amendments to the county Code to assist with enforcement efforts.
