Sunshine and rainbows follow a day of rain

The first major storm in months brought heavy rain and gusty winds to the Eastside and left many residents to deal with flooded streets, freeways and leaky roofs.  But, near day’s end, the sun managed to peek through the clouds while some faint rainbows appeared against the mostly gray skies.

The area remains under a flash flood watch until 10 pm, with rainfall of as much as an inch hour possible at times, the National Weather Service said this afternoon. Expect the potential for heavy rain as well as thunderstorms to decrease during the late evening.

Sunny skies are expected to return Wednesday afternoon, and, by this weekend, today’s storms will be distant memory as temperatures are forecast to reach into the high 70s and even low 80s.

As the rain fell this afternoon, a firefighter approached a smoldering utility pole on Vin Scully Avenue near Stadium Way, where traffic signals were out.
