Silver Lake prepares to say goodbye to a long-time beauty salon and a Sunset Junction coffee shop while Historic Filipinotown welcomes a new boba spot.

Read on for Shopper & Diner news.

Modem Salon & Spa is closing after more than 30 years, the Silver Lake salon announced on its Facebook page.   Owner Myrna Marin, who is retiring after more than 40 years in the beauty business, said the salon’s last day will be February 2.  “It has been my pleasure to serve our guests and community since 1985 as we’ve journeyed through revolutionary changes in hair styling and products,” she wrote in a letter to customers.

The salon will be offering discounts on products starting Jan. 10 through closing. Modem Salon is at 1712 Silver Lake Blvd.

The Academy Burger, a collaboration that has taken years to perfect by two Highland Park hotspots, is having its own Burger Release Party on Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ETA’s Ryan Julio and Matt Glassman, who are both former Father’s Office alums, and Mr. Holmes Bakehouse’s executive chef Josh Davis, is the team behind The Academy Burger’s creation. The Academy Burger comes with a patty comprised of a trifecta of Santa Carota Beef – chuck, brisket and short rib; two distinct cheeses, Parmesan Crisp and housemade pimento cheese; piquillo peppers and Calabrian hot chiles for a nice kick, all encompassed in a custom-made Mr. Holmes Bakehouse potato bun crafted by Davis. The burger is available at ETA, 5630 N. Figueroa St. in Highland Park.

The Boba Guys have landed in Historic Filipinotown, Eater LA reports. It’s the second Los Angeles-area location, with the first being in Culver City. The boba spot is currently open with limited hours. Expect a grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 12. Boba Guys is at 1670 Beverly Blvd. in Historic Filipinotown.

After seven years in operation, Sunset Junction Coffee Shop in Silver Lake is going dark on Sunday, Jan. 27, Eater LA reports. Apparently, the building was recently sold to owners who have their eyes on something completely new for the space. Owner Jenna Turner (Habitat Coffee and D3) reported to Eater LA that she had “nothing but love for her time at Sunset Junction.” Sunset Junction Coffee Shop is at 3916 Sunset Blvd. in Silver Lake.

That’s it for this week’s Shopper & Diner Report!
