Silver Lake Naked Ladies putting on a summer floral show

Silver Lake —  The pink blossoms of Naked Ladies are once again brightening up well tended gardens and empty lots in the dead of summer. Thanks to Dan Gershon for this photo of a clump of Amaryllis belladonna on Swan Place.

The South African natives emerge from bulbs on single stalks without leaves — hence the term “naked ladies.”  They don’t care much for water during the summer — and many advise that too much water and fertilizer can cause them to rot.

By the fall, the blooms have shriveled up but bright green leaves have emerged in time to soak up the fall and winter rains.
