Medel, in an email, describes the how the burglar tunneled into the Silver Lake apartment:

Upon inspection of his apartment he noticed his property missing.  Apparently, the suspect had accessed the victim’s apartment by going into the apartment’s utility room and tunneling threw to the victim’s apartment.  The detective’s investigation revealed the utility room to be unsecured and poorly lit.  It was located on the side of the building where a large Palm tree had provided the suspect some initial cover from being detected.

In addition to locking windows and doors, Medel recommends adding outdoor motion-detector lighting and keeping shrubbery and trees trimmed to give burglars fewer places to hide.
