Signs of old Echo Park revealed

Dec 14, 2018

Echo Park  —   The demolition of a metal shed on Echo Park Avenue this week revealed an old commercial sign painted on the brick wall of the neighboring Del Mor apartment building.

The shops named in the sign reflect a pre-gentrified Echo Park, when the ground floor of the Del Mor was occupied by businesses that catered primarily to Latino customers. Now, the same storefronts that housed places like El Batey, Nelly’s, Botanica La Fe and the Suku Suku Club are occupied by, among other businesses, a juice bar, gourmet grocery and, soon, a vegan deli.

The old sign won’t be visible for long. A 35-unit apartment building is going up soon, hiding this piece of Echo Park past once again.
