Mixed company in Silver Lake

SILVER LAKE – After an ambitious build-out that lasted more than a year – and only 10 short months in business – Mixed Company on Sunset Boulevard has shut its doors for good. The restaurant announced the closure on its web site, but did not offer an explanation.

“The reasons are several and none of them can be summarized succinctly,” the statement said. “We gave it a run and through it all we were fortunate to meet and work with people of the highest integrity and exceptional talent. Together we hit many of our marks; we missed some as well.”

Before opening last year, Mixed Company had been a hotly anticipated and ambitious project by the same team that opened The Black Cat restaurant and bar next door and the Village Idiot on Melrose Avenue. The former laundry was transformed laundry into a “casual modern Middle Eastern” restaurant with seating for 120 people for breakfast, lunch and dinner, LA Eater reported. The original plan for the restaurant involved selling beer and wine to go.

Eater said there is no word yet what will replace Mixed Company in the 2,700 square feet of space.

The building at 3903 Sunset Blvd. is a city landmark  since it was the scene of one of the nation’s first major gay rights demonstrations against police harassment in the 1960s.
