East Los Angeles —  The 27-year-old man suspected of stabbing a passenger riding a transit bus on Whittier Boulevard has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated mayhem, the L.A. County District Attorney said today.

The arraignment of Manuel Ortiz Jr. — aka Chubbs — of Montebello was postponed until May 9, the District Attorney said in a press release.  If convicted of the felony charges, Ortiz, who is being held on $1 million bail, faces a possible maximum sentence of 35 years to life in state prison.

The victim has been identified as Austin Zavala, who was riding the bus on his way to class at East Los Angeles College, reports CBS 2 and Telemundo 52.

Ortiz was arrested a few days after authorities released a surveillance video recorded on the bus.
