Cash and checks were also welcome as members of the Wilson High School marching band played for passing motorists on Huntington Drive as part of a Saturday afternoon fundraiser for the El Sereno school’s band program. More than a dozen band members turned the median strip at Huntington Drive and El Sereno Avenue into a stage and drive-up fundraiser, with motorists slowing down to hand over donations to the median-strip musicians. The goal is to raise about $2,000 to help replace and repair equipment – like the worn out drum Kristine Sandoval used on Saturday – and defray the cost of costumes, sheet music and other items.
“We’re always finding ways to fund raise,” said drum major Joel Alcazar.
The band has played in the median strip before, said band treasurer and trumpet player Brayan Rubio, whose instrument was patched up with black tape. The same location had yielded $600 during a previous performance, and band members were counting on motorists to be as equally generous on Saturday.
If you did not happen to drive by on Saturday as the band was playing but want to contribute, contact the school at (323)276-1600 or contact the Wilson Mules Band Boosters on Facebook.
