Eastside Weekend: Mother’s Day gift shopping; fried chicken & craft beer in East L.A; Cinco de Mayo cumbia

Get an early start on Mother’s Day gift shopping this weekend by visiting one of several makers’ markets. In El Sereno, more than 40 women of color will be selling handmade goods at the  Mujeres Market while the All About Mothers Pop Up in Echo Park offers  massages and manicures while you are “shopping for a gift.”

Read on for our top 10 events and things-to-do this weekend:


May the 4th Be With You – Find some cholo-inspired Darth Vader pins amongst other Star Wars-inspired resin toys and figurines by DCA Toys and Hecho En East Los during this one day pop-up.


Shopping – Bring your mom along for a day of shopping at Mujeres Market: La Mama Edition at the Eastside Cafe in El Sereno. Shop for handmade gifts and art made by more than 40 women of color vendors.

Cinco de Mayo – As if you needed an excuse to day drink, Footsies Bar in Cypress Park will have happy hour from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. with oldies and soul tunes courtesy of the Ghetto Blaster L.A. crew. If you think you can hang, stick around for Mas Exitos, where Turbo Sonidero and Que Madre will be spinning all vinyl sets of cumbia.

Dance – L.A.’s premier funk and soul party, Funky Sole, will be celebrating the life and music of James Brown with all James Brown songs and covers all night at The Echo in Echo Park.

Shopping – Browse the Silverlake Flea’s copious selection of vintage goods, art and handmade gems for a Mother’s Day gift on the playground of Micheltorena Street Elementary School.


Shopping – Why not treat yourself while you shop for a Mother’s Day gift at Kaleidoscope Kollective’s All About Mothers Pop-Up in Echo Park. There will be booths for henna, nail art and massages. Don’t forget to pick up a vegan concha while you’re there!

ShoppingBrowse records and clothing at Tierra de la Culebra art park in Highland Park. Make a day of it and stick around for music and activities. The event is cash only.

Paint – Learn to paint portraits composed of color blocks and pronounced brushstrokes in the style of artist Claire Salvo as she leads an Oil Portraits Workshop at Makers Mess in Silver Lake.

Eat – Sample craft beers with a side of fried chicken during Sunday Phunday at East L.A.’s fried chicken joint, Phat Birds. The restaurant will be partnering with local small businesses to bring you aguas frescas, sweets, munchies and gear by East Los Boy Apparel.

Coffee & Vegan Brunch – Celebrate Kindness & Mischief Coffee’s two year anniversary in Highland Park with $2 coffee all day, specialty drinks, a vegan brunch by Just What I Kneaded and giveaways.
