A Roundup of Eastside News & Info

There’s a New Age doggy retreat in Cypress Park, Boyle Heights’ White Memorial is trying music therapy and more on how the LAUSD board election is shaping up. Happy Monday!

LAUSD’s crowded ballot

There’s at least 11 candidates running for District 5’s board seat, which covers several Eastside communities including El Sereno and City Terrace as well as Echo Park and Eagle Rock.

The campaign is likely to be a charter versus union battle, as is often the case, reports the LA Times. And it looks like the big union money could go to candidate and Echo Park resident Jackie Goldberg, previously on the school board and a former L.A. City Council and state Assembly woman.

Reporter Howard Blume writes that United Teachers Los Angeles seem to be coalescing around her.

The seat opened after pro-charter board president Ref Rodriguez resigned after pleading guilty to a felony charge related to campaign fundraising violations.

New age dog spa

DEN Urban Dog Retreat takes doggy spas to another level, offering reiki and energy healing for stressed dogs and their owners.

The Cypress Park spa, replete with a crystal-filled healing room, according to LA Magazine, is the brainchild of Lindsay Velez, who founded the popular dog hiking company Eastside Hounds.

A 45-minute reiki session for your dog to “remove emotional or psychological blocks that are impeding physical health, reduce stress and promote relaxation” runs $75. While a 1-hour energy healing session for the two of you is listed at $150.

Where’s the doggy spa? 3252 Arroyo Seco Ave., Cypress Park.

Music heals

That’s the theory behind a program at Adventist Health White Memorial in Boyle Heights. ABC7  reports  children are using percussion, keyboards and other instruments to distract them from the pain and anxiety of medical treatment.  And it seems to be working.
