A brush fire broke out in Glendale  near the 2 and 134 freeways  this afternoon, sending a  thick tower of smoke into the sky above the hills north of Eagle Rock and prompting closure of some freeway lanes.  Crews and helicopters from the Los Angeles Fire Department are assisting Glendale firefighters to put out the blaze, which began before 3 p.m. near Harvey Drive  and 134 Freeway, according to preliminary information from the LAFD.

The City of Glendale, on its Twitter feed, said the Chevy Chase Canyon area is closed to allow fire units into the area.  ABC7 reports that a portion of Glendale Adventist Hospital and one street are being evacuated.   Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol reports the freeway interchange has been shut down, according to a Twitter posting.

* Update @ 5:50 p.m.: City of Glendale said the fire has been nearly knocked down and the 2 Freeway is expected to reopen soon.
