Morning Report

  • Boyle Heights is nowhere near the Mexican border. But the U.S. Border Patrol has made several arrests in Boyle Heights this spring of persons in this country illegally, raising concerns among immigrant advocates that the agency is becoming more active in the area. Justice Department guidelines say Border Patrol agents can enforce laws in the U.S. within a 100 miles of international boundaries as well as the coast. That puts Boyle Heights and the rest of Los Angeles in the 100-mile Border Zone. L.A. Weekly
  • Last year Loot Crate of Lincoln Heights was ranked as the nation’s fastest growing private firm by Inc. magazine. But the firm, which ships boxes filled with collectibles and other merchandise to about 650,000 subscribers, may have grown too quickly. Chief Executive Chris Davis has been forced to layoff employees and seek new ways to expand profit margins while continuing to grow the company.
