2013 Silver Lake killing remains unsolved; Cal State L.A. to beat the heat by moving graduation indoors

Nov 6, 2017

Unsolved Murder: The murder of Joseph Gatto, who was fatally shot in his Silver Lake home, remains unsolved after four years. Gatto’s son, former California Assemblyman Mike Gatto, has tried to keep attention focused on the killing over the years by holding events. But attendance has waned and the murderer has remained at large. “This year, I’ve chosen to spend the day in quiet solitude at my father’s gravesite,” Gatto said. Los Feliz Ledger

Cool Graduation: Cal State L.A. is planning to move all of its commencement ceremonies indoors for 2018 to protect attendees from heat.  The change is being made after temperatures climbed into the 90s during this year’s ceremonies in May, when medical response teams at the El Sereno college received 30 requests for help and even had to transport some persons to the hospital. The 14 separate ceremonies will be moved to the university gymnasium. University Times

Crime Stats: An LAPD captain has filed a complaint against the department after she accused the department of under reporting crimes in three divisions, including Hollenbeck, which covers Boyle Heights, El Sereno and Lincoln Heights. Capt. Lillian Carranza alleges that she was denied promotions for complaining about the crime numbers. L.A. Times
